Each year Winter Solstice usually falls on December 21 or December 22 when the night is longest and the day is shortest in the northern hemisphere.  In 2017, Winter Solstice will fall on December 22nd, and it is a much celebrated festival in China and amongst the Chinese all over the world. There are many different traditions when it comes to celebrating the Winter Soltice Festival, commonly known as Dong Zhi (冬至), and  the most popular tradition is the eating of a dessert dish known as Tang Yuan (汤圆). These are specially cooked balls of rice that might have a filling of red bean, peanut paste or coconut sugar. The meaning of the word Tang Yang means “unity” and it is believed that eating Tang Yuan during Dong Zhi or Winter Solstice will bring relationship harmony and family unity. Wishing everyone a blissful  Dong Zhi! Master Clarice Chan
